Based on the work of Franklyn Sills, cranio-sacral therapy is an important modality in the treatment of stress, trauma and chronic disease. This ‘micro-physical therapy’ has a positive effect on the autonomy. Healthy body rhythms are restored and the neurological ‘memory’ of pain and trauma are weakened or deleted. Cranio-sacral therapy is derived from the Latin names for the skull (cranium) and lower back (sacrum). Between the skull and the sacrum is the spinal cord and the cerebral spinal fluid. This fluid surrounds the central nervous system and moves in a typical rhythmic motion.
Cranio-sacral therapy allows the therapist to gently access the cerebral and spinal cord membranes, as well as to influence the movements of the cerebral spinal fluid, the nervous system and the bones, muscles and connective tissue. This gentle touch is used to correct disturbances in the natural rhythmic flow of the body.
